Overview

Connecting to PC

Connect Kawii9 to your computer, using USB-C cable.

To re-map keys, please download this JSON file and import to VIA app (right-click and Save as).

New to VIA? Take a look at this VIA Keymapping Guide.

Default Keymap & Re-mapping Keys

To make it easier to follow, please read the quick guide about VIA – the keymapping tool: Tutorial – Keymap (VIA)

You can re-map any key, anytime you want, using VIA.

There are 6 layers with factory-default keymap:

The RGB key is actually MO(5), which momentarily activates Layer-5 (Lighting Control) when held. Means, while holding this key, you can adjust the lighting system. I put it at the bottom-left corner, in all layers (you can change this if you want to).

OLED Display

In the main screen, there are widget which shows information about:

  • The currently activated layer
  • Lighting effect mode
  • Lighting brightness
  • Current knob rotation function (volume adjustment, page scrolling, line scrolling, or monitor brightness adjustment).

There are also:

  • An interactive matrix
  • Logo / animation
Currently, user cannot add/remove widget, also cannot load custom pictures/logo/animation to the screen. Stay tuned, we are working on this.

Rotaty Knob

The knob (encoder) has various functions.

Pressing function:

  • Single press: mute/unmute computer
  • Double press: open/close the Kawii9 Menu

Rotation function (can be changed in Kawii9 Menu or VIA):

  • VOL: media volume adjustment
  • SCR: fast scroll (Page Up/Page Down)
  • Scr: slow scroll (Arrow Up/Down)
  • MOU: mouse scroll (Mouse Wheel Up/Down)
  • BRT: monitor brightness (works on laptop screen & supported monitor only)
You can track its current function on the OLED display (upper-right corner).

LED Lighting System

Kawii9 V2 has two lighting systems:

  • RGB Backlight: per-key, facing up
  • RGB Underglow: facing down
They can be synchronized, sharing same lighting effect. They can also perform different tasks, a good use-case is indicating activated layer, read more: RGB Layers.

Some useful keycodes can be found under LIGHTING section (BL is single-color backlight, RGB is multi-color lighting, we only use RGB keycodes here)

Mouse Keys

You can use the macropad to move your mouse pointer and perfom basic actions: left/right click or scroll. It is useful when you do not have a physical mouse around, and your trackpad is down.

I personally find it difficult to use this function intuitively. But it is good to have a backup anyway.
